What to do before we get there
A few minutes here can save a floor, a ceiling or a basement.
Water is spraying or spreading
Shut off the main water valve. It is usually where the water line comes in: basement wall, crawlspace, utility closet or near the water heater. The meter shut-off in the yard also works but may need a meter key.
Sewage is coming up a drain
Stop using water: no flushing, no washer, no dishwasher. Every gallon you send down has nowhere to go.
The water heater is leaking
Turn off the cold water valve on top of the tank. On a gas unit turn the gas control to off; on an electric unit switch off its breaker.
You smell gas
Leave the building. Do not switch anything on or off. From outside, call your gas utility or 911. Call us for the repair once the area is safe.
A pipe has frozen
Open the faucet it feeds so water can move once it thaws. Never use an open flame on a pipe.
